Wilson College YuJa Video Resources

YuJa is our media platform. You can use YuJa to record and store videos for your classes

Below are two tabs. The first one will give you some basic instructions for getting started with creating videos using YuJa. The second tab contains some resources for specific types of assignments you might have in your classes.

Creating Videos

Accessing YuJa

You can find YuJa in the course menu of any of your Canvas courses. The first time you open YuJa in a course, a Channel is created for that course. Videos you record using the 'Create Recording' button—even from within a course—go to your private My Media library. If you want students to see it, you’ll need to either publish it to the course’s Channel or embed it in your Canvas content. (Instructions for how do to this will follow).

Understanding YuJa Organization

YuJa is both a media creation and a media storage tool. It is helpful to understand how it is structured:

My Media Library

Each user has a personal media library called My Media. It is where videos are stored by default. Videos stored in My Media are only visible to you until they are shared or submitted

Course Channels

Each Canvas course has a YuJa channel where videos for the course are stored. When you click on YuJa in the course navigation menu you will see any videos that you instructor has published to the course channel. You should also see a link to "My Media" where you can find any videos that you have created

Recording Videos

YuJa offers two recording options: Software Capture and Browser Capture. The Software Capture option is more robust and is recommended for most instances.

When you are ready to make a video, click the Create Recording button at the top of the Media Library window

Software Capture (Recommended) Option

To create a video using the YuJa Software Capture app:

Click on the Create Recording tab (1)
If you haven't used YuJa before, click to Download App (2) otherwise
Make sure that Record from your Windows PC or Mac is selected (it is the default) (3)
Click Launch Recorder (4)
If you see "Allow https://wilson.video.yuja.com to open the yuja link with YuJa Software Capture?" click Open Link
If you are prompted to sign in, make sure to choose the SSO (Single Sign On) option with the Wilson domain
The YuJa Software Capture App will open and you are ready to record

Browser Capture

To record a video using the YuJa Browser Capture tool, click the Browser Capture option in the drop down (2 above). You will need to allow your camera and microphone.

While the Browser Capture option doesn't require you to install any software it has limited functionality. It is best for short, simple videos and it can be glitchy - especially with long recordings.

The YuJa Software Capture App

When you choose Software Capture for Mac or PC, it will open the YuJa Software Capture app. While the default settings let you begin recording right away, there are quite a few things that you can customize before recording your video:

Title box - enter the title for your video here. If you don't give it a title here, it will show up in your My Media as "My Event on [Date}". You can change the title later if you forget
Channel button - if you want to specify which channel your video goes in when you finish it, you can do so here, if you don't pick a channel here you can move it later using the Publish button (faculty must enable this for you to be able to use it)
Folder button - if you are using folders to organize your videos you can specify which folder to save the video to (Folders are for instructors - you may not have this)
Video drop down - use this if you have more than one camera and want to specify which one to use
Audio drop down - use this if you want to change your audio input device (headphones for example)
Screen drop down - this lets you specify what is visible when you record among other things. What shows in the window is what will appear in the video. The camera image will be a pop-up and you can choose where it appears
1. Screen Source - turn this off if you just want to make a "talking head" video
2. Display Settings - this lets you specify what monitor or part of the screen that you would like to record
3. Show Annotation Toolbar - this brings up the annotation toolbar that you can use while you are recording. It is off by default

Start - click this when you are ready to record. A small toolbar will appear on your screen with Pause and Stop buttons

Upload Media

You don't have to start from scratch with YuJa. If there is a video that you have already created or one that you found on YouTube, you can also add it to your My Media Library by clicking on the Upload Media button. The Add Media dialog box will open and you can upload a video or click on the link button to add a YouTube or other kind of video. Some of the captioning features might not apply to YouTube videos

Submitting a Video for an Assignment

A video that is only in your My Media isn't available to your instructor. It is recommended that you create the video in My Media so that you can find it again later without having to return to the assignment

When you are ready to submit your video:

Click the Submit Assignment button
Click on the Text Entry tab (if needed)
On the Rich Text Editor (RTE) toolbar click the Apps drop down (looks like plug) and choose Yuja
The YuJa Media dialog box will open. You have 3 options:
1. Choose Media (this shows all videos in your My Media library)
2. Upload Media (to add or link to an existing video that isn't in your library)
3. Create Recording (make a new video)
Once you have selected your video, click the Insert Content button

NOTE: If you use the Create Recording option the video will be associated with the assignment you are submitting and not generally available in your My Media library

Managing Videos

Once you have recorded or uploaded a video in YuJa, you can manage it directly from your My Media library or course channel. Clicking the three vertical dots (“More Actions” menu) reveals several management options. Here’s what each does:

Note: A few of these options are only for instructors

Play - opens the video in the YuJa video player so that you can watch it. You can use this to review your video before sharing it with your students
Share - in theory this allows you to share your video directly with someone by entering their user name, however sometimes the link doesn't come through with videos shared this way. It is recommended that you use the More... option to get a shareable link or embed code
Publish - this is how you get your video from My Media to your course channel. You can publish the video to multiple channels at the same time, just select them from the list, click the right arrow button to add them then click Save
Delete - this removes the video from your library and any channels that it is published in. Videos are kept in the recycle bin for 30 days then permanently deleted.
Edit - this opens the YuJa video editor (explained later)
More... - This opens the Media Details box which allows you to do a number of different things including:
1. General - change the title and add a description
2. Thumbnails - select a thumbnail for your video. You can create a "title slide" and upload that as a custom thumbnail
3. Links - get a direct link or embed code for your video
4. Downloads - download your video your video
5. Comments - enable or disable comments on videos
6. Analytics - get viewing analytics on your video
7. Quizzes - create a video quiz (explained later)
8. Accessibility - captions are generated automatically, but if you have captions that you want to use or if you want to download a transcript, you can do that here.

Editing Videos

YuJa has a video editor that allows you to do things like trim beginnings or ends, cut sections of video, add chapters or slides and more. The video below will give you an overview of what the video editor can do. If you would like to learn more, reach out to helpdesk@wilson.edu.

Video Quizzes

Sometimes instructors will give you an assignment that is a quiz embedded in a YuJa video. If you take the quiz your grade will be recorded in the gradebook, however you will not be able to see details. You can see your responses to a video quiz once the instructor has closed the quiz by clicking on My Account in the YuJa window then clicking on My Grades. You can click the course name and quiz title from the drop down boxes.
