About Lucid (Whiteboard)

Lucid (Whiteboard) is a collaborative digital whiteboard tool that is integrated into Canvas. It allows faculty and students to create, share, and collaborate on things like diagrams, brainstorming, flowcharts and mind maps. This can be done synchronously or asynchronously, and can be embedded on a page or as an assignment.

Key Features

Always Available - unlike the whiteboard in your classroom, a Lucid whiteboard is always available in Canvas. It can be exported and shared without you having to take a picture
Templates - pre-built templates can help you quickly create a resource for your classroom
Fully Integrated - Lucid is fully integrated with Canvas and can be either embedded on a page (see below), or shared as an assignment
Breakout Boards - Breakout Boards allow students to collaborate in small groups similar to breakout rooms in Zoom

Ideas for Using Lucid

Try It Out

Below is a Brainstorming Lucid Whiteboard. After you've had a chance to check out the resources add your idea(s) for ways that you can integrate this tool into your classroom.

While Lucid (Whiteboard) is fully integrated with Canvas, it does require you to have an account and be signed it. If you don't see the whiteboard automatically below, follow the steps as prompted to get signed up or logged in. Please make sure to use your Wilson College email to do this. You should only have to do this once.

Set Up

Setting Up Lucid

Before you can use Lucid, you need to connect/register for an account. Lucid is fully integrated in Canvas, and you only need to do this once. To do this, follow these steps:

Click on Lucid (Whiteboard) on the left navigation menu
Confirm your role (Teacher), and choose an answer regarding the age of your students (over 13). Click Next
If you have never used Lucid before, you will need to register - just follow the on screen prompts to do this.
1. If you have a Lucid account, but aren't logged in, you can sign in using your Wilson credentials
2. If you are already logged in to Lucid, click Connect to Lucid
Click Continue

Getting Familiar With Lucid

Once you are registered/logged in you should see the Lucid landing page. Clicking the Open Lucid button will open the tool so that you can begin creating. There are also links to a lot of helpful resources that you should check out if you haven't used Lucid before.

Resources for Your Students

Your students will also need to register the first time that they use Lucid (Whiteboard). The process is basically the same for students as it is for teachers. You can copy these instructions into your course:

Click on Lucid (Whiteboard) on the left navigation menu
Confirm that you are over the age of 13.
If you have never used Lucid before, you will need to register - just follow the on screen prompts to do this.
1. If you have a Lucid account, but aren't logged in, you can sign in using your Wilson credentials
2. If you are already logged in to Lucid, click Connect to Lucid
Click Continue

Adding Lucid (Whiteboard) to a Course

You have two options for adding Lucid to a course: as an assignment or embedded on a page.

Important Note: When you copy a Canvas course to a new semester, Lucid Whiteboards do not always copy cleanly. Links might break or students might see last semester's content. To avoid this:

Create a new Lucid Whiteboard each term rather than reusing old ones
Save your favorite activities as templates in Lucid so that you can easily create a fresh copy

Adding Lucid as an Assignment

Setting up Lucid as an assignment means that

Each student (or group if it is a group assignment) gets their own Lucid board
You can access the whiteboard in SpeedGrader
The work is connected to the Gradebook - you can assign a grade, give feedback and track submissions

Some Use Case Examples

Students submit a concept map of global business theories
Groups collaboratively create a flowchart as part of a project
Students annotate a case study or diagram and submit their work for a grade

How to set up a Lucid Assignment

The video below shows how to set up a Lucid Assignment and what it will look like for the students. Step by Step instructions follow.

Open a new assignment in Canvas
Add some instructions on what the student will be doing
In the Submission Type drop down, choose Lucid
Click Lucid next to the Lucid icon
Click Lucidspark or Lucidchart depending on your assignment (more in the difference in Additional Resources)
Click Next
Determine the type of document you want students to have a copy of
1. Blank document/board - gives them a blank whiteboard to work in
2. My Documents - lets you pick a template or existing document to work from
Click Next
Pick your document or use +New to create from a template
Click Save & Publish

Embedding Lucid on a Page

Embedding Lucid on a page means that

All students work in the same space, potentially at the same time
No Gradebook connection
Can be used synchronously or asynchronously for things like brainstorming

How to Embed a Lucid Whiteboard on a Page

The following video steps you through the process of embedding a whiteboard on a page. Step by step instructions follow.

Open a new Canvas page (or anything in Canvas with a Rich Content Editor toolbar)
Click on the Lucid Icon
In the dialog box that appears, select an existing Lucid document (or use +New to create a new document)
Click Continue
Select "Edit", "Comment only", or "View only" permissions for the document
Click Insert
Click Save & Publish

Resources You Can Share With Students

Lucid is a robust tool, and a great way to incorporate active learning in your classroom. If you decide to use Lucid, it is a good idea to make sure that the students have everything they need to succeed at their fingertips. Fortunately Lucid has a very robust support system and lots of resources available that you can share with your students.

How brand new Lucid users activate their Lucid account through Canvas - this video will step the students through setting up their Lucid account. Consider including it in the instructions the first time that you use Lucid with your students.

Examples - Reading Activity

Ali Toms does reading activities in her PSY 202 courses using Lucid. They generate good engagement and are a great way to encourage students to process what they have read and apply it. Below you can see two of these reading activities and their resulting charts. Notice that for the first assignment she explains that the students must set up an account before they can use Lucid (You could also include the video linked above in your initial instructions).
